Tom Cruise is Crazy

Recently video of an interview Tom Cruise did to be shown when he was to be presented Scientology’s “Medal of Freedom.” It’s some pretty disturbing stuff he’s talks about, including that Scientologists are the foremost experts on the mind.

In addition, a group calling themselves the “Anonymous” posted a video on YouTube declaring war on Scientology. So far they have been able to crash the official Scientology website and hack the sites of several chapter websites.

Here’s the video:

HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray, Who the F@ck Cares?

Earlier this week Warner Bros, the top studio in terms of home video sales, announced that they were dropping HD-DVD in favor of entirely Blu-Ray and many industry expect this is the end of HD-DVD. My question, who really cares?

The majority of TVs in the United States are still SDTV so most people therefore don’t have any use of any of the HD formats. Especially since the you can’t get a Blu-Ray player for less than $400 or a HD-DVD player for less than $200? And who really wants to pay $30 for a movie in HD when the DVD version is $10. It’s pretty obvious that neither is really taking off when both formats offer you 5 or more movies just for buying the player.

Myself, I’m happy with my $30 HD Upconverting DVD player on my 32″ flat screen waiting until one of these damn formats is the clear winner and the players cost less than $50.

Oh, Charlie, it looks like I’m right

Well the weekend box office estimates came out this afternoon and it looks like I wasn’t the only one who’s already sick of Charlie Wilson’s War. The film finished with an opening weekend total of about $9.6 million, good for 4th place behind National Treasure: Book of Secrets, I am Legend, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Looking at average revenue per screen it finished 7th with $3,735 per screen behind National Treasure, Juno, I am Legend, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Sweeney Todd, and Atonement.

You may say that $9.6 million isn’t that bad. To put Charlie’s opening in prospective, it is the worst wide release opening weekend for a Tom Hanks film since That Thing You Do!, written and directed by Mr. Hanks himself, back in October 1995 and that movie premiered on 700 less screens. That’s 12 years and 12 movies ago and includes the god-awful The Ladykillers in 2004 which made $3 million more on 1000 less screens!

Damn, sometimes it feels great to be right…

Oh, Charlie…

Ever get so sick of a movie or TV show before it comes out because of all the ads for it no matter how many people say it’s great? Well I’m that way with Charlie Wilson’s War. The main reason I have concluded is Julia Roberts. If I have to hear that line “Oh, Charlie…” one more freaking time I’m going to reach through the TV and rip that god awful bleached blond wig off her head and duct tape her mouth shut. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. One guy I know mocks that line every time hears it.

I’m not going to lie, I’m not the biggest Julia Roberts fan, but I can at least stand her for the most part. Not this time.

I know in advertising one of the biggest goal is the number of impressions, but I think this is the case of the large number of impressions is backfiring on it’s ass.
