Oh, Charlie, it looks like I’m right

Well the weekend box office estimates came out this afternoon and it looks like I wasn’t the only one who’s already sick of Charlie Wilson’s War. The film finished with an opening weekend total of about $9.6 million, good for 4th place behind National Treasure: Book of Secrets, I am Legend, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Looking at average revenue per screen it finished 7th with $3,735 per screen behind National Treasure, Juno, I am Legend, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Sweeney Todd, and Atonement.

You may say that $9.6 million isn’t that bad. To put Charlie’s opening in prospective, it is the worst wide release opening weekend for a Tom Hanks film since That Thing You Do!, written and directed by Mr. Hanks himself, back in October 1995 and that movie premiered on 700 less screens. That’s 12 years and 12 movies ago and includes the god-awful The Ladykillers in 2004 which made $3 million more on 1000 less screens!

Damn, sometimes it feels great to be right…
